The Four-Blocks Literacy Model is a multilevel, balanced literacy framework that incorporates four different approaches each day to teach children how to become better readers, writers, and spellers. Developed by Drs. Patricia Cunningham and Dorothy Hall, this model acknowledges that not all children learn in the same way and provides substantial instruction to support the learning personalities of all students.

The Four-Blocks Literacy Model provides daily instruction in reading, writing, and spelling that supports the learning styles of all children. ALL children in the first, second, and third grades become better readers and writers through systematic, multimethod, multilevel instruction. The Four-Blocks Literacy Program contains ALL four essential components of a balanced literacy program, as well as, steps for implementing and managing a variety of classroom activities.

Guided Reading
Teach children comprehension skills and strategies, and teach children how to read all types of literature with a focus on building comprehension. Reading instruction in this block uses a variety of reading formats and before- and after-reading activities.

Self-Selected Reading
Invite children to become lifelong readers through teacher read-alouds and opportunities to read self-selected books at their own level. Four-Blocks products have ideas for organization, conferencing, and book sharing.

Writing
